This series was made for my undergraduate graduation in 2005, in a realist manner with surreal and cartoonish touches. That year it was selected for A Century of Sculpture, the national sculpture exhibition organized by the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center — I was the youngest exhibiting sculptor, and works from the series were purchased for collection. But precisely because this work's form was categorized into the post-80s "Cartoon Generation" positioning in Chinese contemporary art, after entering the Central Academy of Fine Arts for graduate study in 2009 I explicitly refused two established paths — the traditional route of realist sculpture grounded in literary symbolism, and the label and positioning of a "Cartoon Generation" artist identity — turning instead to material language as my research direction.
