An Axis with 8 Scales
Creation Time: 2020 Size: 167x160x160cm Material: stainless steel
I created this work during an artist residency program when we stayed in an uncivilized, rustic village in Hebei. The villagers seem to follow in the footsteps of their ancients: they grind the grains and cereals around the mill and roll the wheel to fetch water from the well. Observing their daily life, I notice that most of the labor formulates on a rotating axle, revolving on an axis, which resembles the mechanism of a music box. The echo between the gesture of manual labor and the drive of music movement envelops the village with a romantic veil, offering us to discover another slice of the tough and primitive lifestyle.
