Gaudí proposes that straight lines belong to humans while curve lines belong to God. Faced with a dead, lifeless locust tree, I cut its organic, natural surface into geometric parts, attempting to play with the boundary between life and object: is it a tree or a block of wood?It has both the form endowed by God, the original creator, and the appearance given by the human. Probably, it denotes a mutual effort of the two.

My treatment of this locust tree fully followed my methodology of the specificity of material. Unlike At Last, this fallen locust tree had a stockier mass, a twisted surface, and more sturdy branches; what I saw in it was a sense of the rhythm of growth, so I wanted to carve its surfaces \u2014 which transition naturally across the extension of time \u2014 into more cadenced geometric structures: negating the tree\u2019s natural surface grain in order to reveal the form, grain, and texture of wood as seen through human eyes. As for whether it is a tree or a block of wood, that depends only on the viewer\u2019s perspective; where it inherently resides, there is no answer, nor does one need to be given \u2014 which is why I finally named this work Untitled, because I could give it no definition at all.
