Starting from "Source"
Water is always the carrier of people's emotions, whether it is "waves piled up high, like layers of colored glaze" or "a mirror-like surface without wind ripples". "Goodness is like water, it benefits all things without contention." Therefore, water has the virtues of being pure, gentle, vast, and humble. It can be seen that the ancients had different feelings towards water - it is pure and full of power, and has countless forms in an instant. Its inherent physical properties are fascinating and thought-provoking. In addition to expressing aspirations and reasoning, water itself also has sufficient aesthetic value. How to capture the dynamic of water blooming natural beauty in an instant is a topic that literati and artists have often discussed throughout history.
After the Art Intervention team conducted a comprehensive investigation and analysis of the project area's landscape and business environment, they combined the characteristics of different plots with their attributes and demands to give design elements a storyline for interpretation on site. They invited Mr. Song Jianshu, an artist with outstanding experience and achievements in public sculpture design, according to the characteristics of the landscape environment. The results of combining the artist's emotional expression with professional control were eventually landed in the project's most representative sales office water scenery.
The sculpture is named "Source" and freezes the moment when water splashes and transforms into a butterfly into a sculpture. Although the ripples of water are dynamic, the artwork captures the moment of transformation and freezes it in time, not only utilizing space for creation but also using the architectural environment as a medium for its creation. Considering the refraction of light, spatial parameters, supporting metal framework, and structural design, SUS304 stainless steel is used as the main material, and the sculpture is produced using a combination of forging and casting techniques. The polished mirror-like reflection effect of the stainless steel sculpture complements the water landscape, enlarging the visual space and connecting people's visual space with public space.
The scene of water as clear as a mirror and butterflies as dreamy as a fantasy is inspired by the story of "Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream". Zhuangzi believed that all things originate from the same source and that different things can be transformed into one another in a person's subjective consciousness. Therefore, forgetting the self and the object, the natural and spontaneous state of mind is the way to pursue freedom and authenticity.
While continuing this classical philosophical idea, the artwork uses modern narrative methods and expression to go beyond the simple medium of water and discuss the dialectical relationship between stillness and motion. When the artwork touches and merges with nature and time, the reference point is still, but the light and shadow change every second. The static water splashes and dynamic water surface construct a new framework of thought, and the sunlight projected onto the artwork seems to reveal the passage of time in the artwork.
When it comes to butterflies, besides the metamorphosis of breaking out of a cocoon and becoming a butterfly, another high-frequency image that comes to people's minds is the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect refers to the long-term, massive chain reaction that can be triggered by a tiny change in the initial conditions of a dynamic system. The theory proves that any development of things has constants and variables, and the trajectory of their development can be traced with regularity. The butterfly shape, like a splash of water, captures this subtle and highly aesthetic quantity in infinite variables and freezes it, projecting it onto the ever-changing water surface. It demonstrates the ability to seize key opportunities amid change and constancy. In the dialectic of stillness and motion and change, we can see Bai Juyi's reflection in his poem "Playing with Still Water": "Those in motion enjoy the flowing water, those in stillness enjoy the still water. Utility is not as good as flow, and discernment is not as good as stillness."
Public art is a sign of a city's mature development and the condensation of the spiritual language of enterprises and even regions. We believe that the sculpture "Source" will continue to inspire and stimulate unlimited imagination in a positive sense in the future of the high-tech demonstration zone, becoming a representative cultural symbol.
