Customized For Beijing Rosewood Hotel
The bronze sculpture "Jiaotu" is a crucial main sculpture project in the art customization of the Rosewood Hotel in Beijing. Invited by the art planner and art consultant of the magnificent hotel, Emily de Wolfe Pettit, Song Jianshu created several sculptures for the hotel, among which the most prominent large-scale sculpture "Jiaotu" has become the main image for the hotel to promote its art collection.
Through the two immortal guardians on either side of the hotel entrance, the artist reinterprets the contemporary narrative of traditional clay sculpture. As an image of a divine beast, the majestic statue has clean, slender lines and a sturdy bronze appearance.
In Chinese mythology, "Jiaotu" is one of the nine sons of the dragon. The image of the nine sons of the dragon evolved into different components and was placed on traditional wooden architecture in China. Jiaotu is the guardian divine beast for warding off evil and protecting households, and is often placed on the gate of a courtyard with a copper ring in its mouth. This set of works extends the relief of the beast's face holding a copper ring to a complete body divine beast sculpture, which serves as a guardian of guest safety and dignity. The position relationship of the two divine beasts facing each other signifies the opening of the two doors, which is also a symbol of the Rosewood Hotel opening its doors to welcome guests.
